The Smallest Time Unit in the Mayan Calendars
In Mayan Cosmovision, the number 13 holds great significance. It represents the fundamental cycle within the Mayan sacred calendar, Cholq’ij, which consists of 20 Q’ij (days or essences) and 13 Ton (strengths, numbers, or evolutionary forces that unfold across time and space). Each Q’ij combines with one of the 13 Tons to complete the Cholq’ij cycle.
Since 13 × 20 = 260 days, this sacred cycle aligns closely with human gestation, lasting approximately nine Gregorian months—the duration of a full-term pregnancy.
A Trecena refers to a 13-day period within this cycle. It functions as a “week” in the Mayan sacred calendar. With 13 weeks of 20 days each, the Cholq’ij spans its complete 260-day cycle.
The Significance of 13 and 20The number 13 corresponds to the major joints in the human body. The number 20 is linked to 10 telluric (Earth-bound) energies and 10 celestial, or cosmic (sky-bound) energies, both of which influence human beings. In Mayan understanding, humans act as antennas, receiving, connecting, and balancing these cosmic and earthly forces. Additionally, 20 is reflected in our fingers and toes—ten facing the sky, channeling celestial energy to Earth, and ten connected to the ground, drawing Earth’s telluric energy upwards. This profound connection between numbers, nature, and human existence is at the heart of the Mayan sacred calendar, guiding the rhythm of life and evolution. In Mayan tradition, the Ajq’ij—or daykeepers—carry a sacred responsibility. They track and record the passage of time, measuring its cyclical flow as it moves forward and returns. With each turn of this eternal cycle, the history of the world is preserved. With every revolution or fold in the infinite spiral of the Great Kan, there is an eternal return, bringing forth a resemblance of past events. In this way, we can understand destiny—just as we know the path of the Sun and Grandmother Moon, who come and go each day, so too do human beings move through cycles of existence. It is through this understanding that we can cast the lots and foresee events, recognizing the rhythms of time and the unfolding of fate. (from the Book of Destiny by Carlos Barrios). The Beginning of a Trecena: A Cycle of Transformation offered to us.The start of a trecena is marked by the number 1, always accompanied by a guiding essence or Nawal. Every day, we are visited by a unique combination of a Nawal (essence) and a number (strength or force). This principle reflects a fundamental aspect of Mayan Cosmovision: the presence of polarity and counterparts in all that exists. Everything unfolds in pairs—forces that interact, cooperate, and dance together to create a specific outcome, a unique possibility that changes with each passing day.
One way to understand the rhythm of a trecena is through the life cycle of a seed: • Day 1: Sowing the seed—the moment of initiation. • Day 2: Resting in the soil—a time of stillness and integration. • Day 3: Germination—the first stirrings of life. • Day 4: A pause—allowing the process to settle. • Day 5: Sprouting—emerging from the soil. • Day 6: Rest—the counterpart to growth. • Day 7: Proliferation—spreading its potential. • Day 8: Another pause—balancing expansion. • Day 9: Budding—preparing for bloom. • Day 10: Rest again—to absorb its transformation. • Day 11: Flowering—expression in full form. • Day 12: A final night of rest—before completion. • Day 13: Fruition—the cycle reaches its peak.
This natural rhythm mirrors the sacred dance of time, where movement and stillness, creation and integration, work together to shape reality. Through this understanding, we learn to embrace each trecena as a living process, guiding us through transformation and renewal. The Nawal and the Trecena: A Gift of ConsciousnessEach Trecena begins with a Nawal, and together, the combination of the number and the Nawal reveals a unique opportunity being offered by Consciousness (Kan). This is an invitation for us to engage with and integrate its energy into our lives. The essence of the Nawal that initiates the trecena infuses all 13 days ahead with its influence. For example, if a trecena begins under the guidance of Tijax, the healer, we can expect a powerful period for both spiritual and physical healing. This energy shapes the possibilities available to us, guiding our awareness and actions. On this webpage, I will be sharing the insights and opportunities each Trecena brings—offering practical ways to connect with its energy in daily life. These may include simple rituals, mindful awareness in daily activities, and small but meaningful changes that align with the cosmic flow. Stay tuned for these treasures! The Mayan Calendars are not just a gift to the Maya; they are a living gift to all of humanity—a sacred tool for guidance, transformation, and balance, especially in these times of great change. With gratitude to Tat and Nan, the wisdom keepers who preserved and shared this sacred knowledge with the world. |
